The plan is to remove the engine from a 1993 FZJ80 and replace it with a diesel straight six. We want to keep the automatic transmission that is in the FZJ80 but try to take the transfer case from the standard trans that is currently on the diesel.

this should be a sweet build. Not sure about the auto and split case matching up.

Based on my research, you can't match up a split case with the A442f.

Also, there are differences between the automatics that came behind gas engines and the automatics that came behind diesel engines.

Yea..I didnt think the split case would match to the auto but when we pull the engine we will see how it all looks. Possibly worst case scenario my father will decide to stick with the standard transmission.

Unfortunately it still looks that same, this project was on hold over the summer but we should be getting to it in the fall.

The only reason I don't have a HDJ81 is I don't trust my wife to drive a rhd on the highway. I'll be watching this!

Its really not an issue, I hardly pass on the highway but I do get passed a lot.

My surf is terrible on the highway.
There is too much heavy truck traffic, and everybody else is speeding.
It just doesn't have enough horsepower to get around a semi in a timely fashion. I do enjoy it around the city and on short drives though.
I would just like a couple extra cylinders under the hood.

diference between the surf and 80 series is a 2.4 to 4.2 litre i believe?? 4runners/surfs are too damn heavy for the engine that they end with..

Found a little time to tinker over the holidays.

The gas engine coming out

The diesel going in

We found that the motor mounts did not line up perfectly once we went to tighten them up so it will have to be pulled again so we can adjust those.

Small update. The engine is in the truck and seems to be running well. only some minor things to do yet. we have to get the exhaust done, replace the clutch slave cylinder and figure out how to unlock the brakes. I'm not sure if people are actually interested in this or not but I will post pictures and maybe a link to a video once we find the time to finish it.
