I just picked this up through a group buy with the RMLCA guys.

It's a dual band 5W hand held HAM radio and it's CHEAP. Came with charger and headset.

It also gets FM, has a flash light, has a chinese lady talking menu and I read that it can tx/rx on the FRS bands as well (this might be illegal) Cool

It's a BAOFENG UV-5R and should cost you around $60 shipped. I also got a better antenna off of deal extreme for $6. It's the Nagoya NA-519.

For those looking to get into HAM or want to be able to here what's going on with other HAM user, this is a neat little unit.

I would be interested in getting another if someone is ordering one.

Good buy Brad!

It looks like it might be an "Erikson" group of manufacturer.

Let me know if you go in on another group buy!

I have a credit at DX I've been looking to spend. Shipping is free, so no use for me to have it send to Sask. I should just order up my own.

Looks like we lost a few massages here.

Anyway, I received the correct antenna today, along with a clamp-on antenna mount and the programming cable. This cable should improve things a bunch. If it works, I'll re-post the part# from DX.

The mount is a little rough, but will work. It's going on the camper.

I ordered the cable you posted before the matrix had a glitch. I just need to get a windows machine running to use the program.

I am REALLY liking this little radio.

Me too. I leave it on the RCMP channel while working outside or in my classroom. Fun to hear them chasing lost horses and checking (mostly reserve) plates. This antenna has improved reception a LOT.

I have also learned what Tango Hotel is cop code for...

Cable works with the Baofeng software from www.uv-5r.com. Used COM3 on my machine. I'm able to read the programming info from the radio, now I just need to find what to program back in.

By internal mods, do you mean mods like these where he replaces resistors and capacitors? I don't have the equipment to solder SMD components. Need to learn the ins and outs of amateur radio first anyway!

What are you planning? This software mod that lets you tune down to CB seems interesting. But I don't want to risk burning out the radio just yet.
