So my wife and I are planning a two week vacation this summer, working around a family reunion and wanting to hit up some stops along the way. Normally we head up North to go camping, but the reunion is in Cypress Hills so we're changing this up. We'll be travelling when our little one is almost 2, so we're keeping the travel distances reasonable between camp sites and allowing ourselves to camp at many different areas along the way. So our current route looks like this:

We might be nixing either stop B or C...but there's a long stretch between G and home that we'd like to find a place to stay. We're staying at some pretty "touristy" areas along the way so a cool obscure campground between Drumheller and Saskatoon would be pretty cool.

We're driving the Rav so light offroad is okay, nothing crazy like most of you would do. Laughing

Also any other suggestions for cool places to stop or camp would be great too.

I wish I could help but we usually make a stop in Drumheller at the museum for the kids (now 6,4,2) and then make our way to Canmore/Banff area. Saskatoon to Drumheller is always a boring drive and not much to see or do IMHO, I have seen the typical RV campgrounds but there usually not very far of the highway. We rather stay in the mountains longer, but that means I do more late day/night driving when the kids are asleep.

You could check out Spray Lakes by Canmore, people drive all kinds of vehicles on the road but it has a lot of washboard, just need to drive slower. We have stayed there a few times and its been great. Quarry Lake is also close and is a great place to take the kids swimming.

If you don't want the craziness of the big campground by Banff/Canmore, the Kananaskis country is also really nice and not as crazy. We stayed at Eau Claire, Great campsites, super quiet and it had a play ground. I would stay away from the Bow valley campground, If you get a good site your fine but there are a lot that you hear the train all the time, woke up our kid a few times.

If you are interested in doing some hikes I could recommend a few good ones.

Cool I appreciate all the info. South East Sask is an area that I don't venture into much and we've never really camped in Alberta in a very looooong time. I'll take a look at the Kananaskis area.

I hear there is a ton of moose in Cypress, our friends went there two years ago and all the photos they showed were of different moose. No photos of their camp or what they did, just moose. Laughing We're going to be in Cypress for 5 days with family so it should be fun!

E is Dinosaur provincial park, seen some photos from around there on Google and it looks really cool and it would make a good stop before we made the rest of the trip to the mountains. We plan on hitting Drumheller (G) on the way back, more so for our little one to see some cool stuff.

Cypress Hills is a really nice area of the province. I've spent a lot of time backpacking in the West Block.

I plan to camp Cypress Hills this summer, and just see more of this province in general!
